Phonics and Reading Scheme
The children in Reception are taught phonics using the 'Jolly Phonics' scheme. This teaches the sounds made be letters and groups of letters, called graphemes. The children are taught to blend the sounds for reading and segment them as they write words. These foundations are then built on as the children learn spelling strategies using 'Letters and Sounds' in Key Stage 1. This is supported using reading books from the 'Floppy Phonics' range.
Our reading scheme throughout the school is based around the Oxford Reading Tree Books. This includes Floppy Phonics, Biff, Chip and Kipper Decode and Develop, Traditional Tales, Songbirds Phonics, Biff, Chip and Kipper Classic Stories, Snapdragons ,All Stars and Project X Decodable Stories. We supplement this scheme by using books from the Collins "Big Cat" scheme.
